Career as a Surveyor

“Most of the work of a Surveyor is done outdoors. However, to do their charting, drafting or report writing they have to do it in the office. Sometimes Surveyors work long hours in good weather to make up for lost time or to meet deadlines. Some projects require traveling over the jungle or rough terrain. Career as a Surveyor demands commitment and high quality jobs. Usually this profession dominated by men, rarely women involved with this career.

Surveying is basic to all planning, development and construction and it involves the making of maps and the determination of boundaries. Surveyors use tools like global-positioning satellite, or GPS, and laser-based equipment to collect data about the shape, contours and elevations of the earth.

There are five categories in which Surveyors can specialize, namely:

1. Engineering surveying
2. Geodetic surveying
3. Cartography
4. Cadastral surveying
5. Engineering surveying
6. Hydrographic and oceanographic surveying

Common Requirements / Skills

Usually Surveyors work in the open air and travel a lot. They must have knowledge in computers. They often work on their own and must be able to trust their own judgment and make their own decisions. Surveyors also work with the public and it is therefore important for them to be able to maintain good human relations. Much of the Surveyor's work is physically demanding and requires transporting heavy equipment.

A little bit detail (example only):

1. Minimum Degree / Diploma in Quantity Surveying or equivalent
2. Knowledge on contract terms and conditions of PAM or JKR Forms, basic pricing experience, quantity measurements and building materials will be an added advantage.
3. Minimum 3 - 5 years' relevant working experience in construction industry
4. Strong communication and interpersonal skills to liaise effectively with clients, consultants and contractors.
5. Mature, committed, meticulous with an eye on details, result-orientated, independent, technical orientated and able to maintain confidentiality and cope with date line.

How to Obtain Licensing and Education

All states require Surveyors to obtain licensing. Some require applicants to earn a degree or a diploma, while others would accept a combination of education and experience. All applicants must pass a written exam to earn a license.

Many technical schools and community colleges provide surveying programs which, usually ranging from one to three years in length. Some colleges and universities also provide bachelor's degree programs in surveying or related fields. For more information, visit (just to name a few):

Where To Apply

You can apply to work with a provincial administrations, municipalities, government departments, universities or in private sectors. It is also common among experienced Surveyors to open a private practice or go into partnership with other Surveyors.

1. Present and expected salaries; and
2. Contact number together with a passport-sized photograph (N.R.).
